A photo of a cabin at Cascade Cottages in Rocky Mountain National Park

Cascade Cottages

Originally developed as a rustic resort lodge and later operated as a cabin camp, the owners of Cascade Cottages adapted their tourist accommodations to meet changing norms as the resort industry in the Rocky Mountain National Park area evolved over time.

Bayou Gulch

Bayou Gulch is a prehistoric campsite with evidence of occupation from the Early Archaic (7800 to 5000 B.P., 6650 to 3800 B.C.E.) through Protohistoric (1540-1860 C.E.) periods. Because of the ongoing occupation through chronological eras, the archaeological site has been used to establish and corroborate the chronological prehistory of eastern Colorado and the west-central Plains.

Buchan Cabin

Built by Ruth and Alexander Buchan between 1935 and 1937 under the auspices of the United States Forest Service Recreation Residence program, the Buchan Cabin is one of the few remaining privately-owned isolated cabins in the Roosevelt National Forest. Still used by the Buchan family as a summer retreat, the cabin represents a means of public recreation within the forest that has become increasingly rare since the Recreation Residence program effectively ended in the 1960s.

Edwin L. Smith Building

Constructed in 1911, the Edwin L. Smith Building played a notable role in the development of La Veta's central business district and continues to be one of the most prominent commercial buildings on Main Street.

Wagon Wheel Gap Hot Springs Resort

Initially developed in the 1870s, the original tourist facilities at the Wagon Wheel Gap Hot Springs Resort provided rudimentary lodging accommodations and soaking pools. In late 1800s, the Wagon Wheel Gap Improvement Company purchased the resort and constructed extensive improvements between 1902 and 1905. These improvements established the overall rustic character and layout of the guest facilities that remains evident today.

Mary Murphy Tramway Romley Terminal

The Mary Murphy began like many other mines in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. During the early 1870s, scattered gold and silver discoveries on the west side of the Arkansas River valley drew prospectors into the Collegiate Peaks. Such prospectors included John Royal, Abner E. Wright, and a third individual who headed up the Chalk Creek drainage in 1873. There they found a mineralized vein that carried gold, silver, and industrial metals, and the party claimed it as the Mary Murphy.

A photo of the Pueblo Revival-style Coronado Lodge in Pueblo.

Coronado Lodge

Constructed ca. 1940-41 by Ralph and Anna Ferris, the Coronado Lodge was part of a national boom in motel construction between 1940 and 1960 that reflected the nation’s growing automobile-based mobility and increased disposable income for leisure travel in the years following World War II. The Coronado Lodge is important for many reasons, most strikingly for its association with the history of African American travel and tourism during the era of segregation.

Sacred Heart Church (Fruita)

Completed in 1922 to accommodate the expanding influence and reach of the Roman Catholic Church within the Lower Grand Valley, the ministry of St. Malachy’s Church sought to "build the prettiest church in the valley."

Denver, Northwestern & Pacific Railway Depot (Kremmling)

The 1906 Denver, Northwestern & Pacific Railway Depot in Kremmling is a fine example of an early-twentieth-century, wood-frame combination depot. Combination depots were regularly built in rural areas where there was insufficient freight or passenger traffic to warrant separate depots.

A photo of the Hannah Barker House in Boulder

Hannah Barker House

As a member and leader in many women’s clubs during the Progressive Era, Hannah Connell Barker established and chaired committees that carried out important civic projects in Boulder. These clubs were important social outlets for women during a period when intellectual pursuits were limited.
