Located 26 miles southwest of Pueblo in Pueblo and Custer counties, the Squirrel Creek Recreational Unit consists of a four-mile segment of a historic road (now known as Squirrel Creek Trail) that parallels much of Squirrel Creek.

Zapata Ranch was one of the first and largest cattle ranches in the area. 

The Trujillo Homestead is an important part of Hispanic settlement in the San Luis Valley in the latter half of the 19th century.

Constructed in the Territorial Adobe style, the building features a gabled roof, an Anglo modification of the traditional Hispanic flat roof.

The Medano Ranch Headquarters is an important part of the development of cattle ranching in the San Luis Valley from the open range days of the 1870s through the mechanized operations of the period following World War II.

This well-preserved 1891 storefront is a textbook example of a small 19th century commercial building with its recessed central transomed entrance flanked by large display windows above paneled wood kickplates. 

Constructed between 1910 and 1912, this 146-foot long wooden bridge is associated with the Rio Grande Southern Railway. 

Constructed in 1910, Hog Park Guard Station is the oldest standing guard station in Routt National Forest.

The Coalmont Schoolhouse consists of two buildings - the circa 1915 Coalmont school and the circa 1905 Hebron schoolhouse which was relocated and joined to the Coalmont facility around 1920. 

The Frazer Barn is associated with the settlement and beginnings of agriculture in the area to the east of the Black Hawk and Central City gold mining districts.
