The building was the largest project undertaken by the WPA during its late 1930s work at Great Sand Dunes.  It represents the Rustic Movement, championed by the National Park Service’s first director, Stephen T. Mather, who advocated the use of native materials and vernacular building traditions wherever possible.  There is an adjacent fee station.
