Colorado Stories Facilitator Volunteer

Job Description:

The Colorado Stories Facilitator works within our Colorado Stories exhibit as part of the education department, and facilitates any one of several different activities within the exhibit that are designed to offer a hands on experience and further the learning and enjoyment of our visitors of all ages, but primarily with family audiences. Volunteers will be stationed in exhibit gallery, facilitating touch-cart or prescribed family programs.

Training on customer service, exhibit content, program facilitation, general museum education, and intergenerational learning theory will be provided.

Job Description:

Engagement Guides will lead scheduled adult tours of the exhibits through the group sales program. This facilitated experience will help audiences engage with our core exhibits more thoroughly than if they explored on their own, including behind-the-scenes information not mentioned in our labels. Experiences will be tailored to specific audiences and Engagement Guides will need to adapt based on the audience and their needs. Tours are scheduled as needed based on request from groups or evening events through rentals.

Training will be provided to include engaging visitors through an inquiry-based method that allows visitors to evaluate and experience the content of the exhibitions and partake in the learning process. Additional training on customer service, exhibit content, general Colorado history, experience facilitation, inquiry, and basic museum education will be provided.

Guest Service Concierge

Desired Schedule:

Volunteer Guest Services Concierges will staff the front desk of the History Colorado Center daily from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Job Description:

Be one of the first faces to welcome guests to the History Colorado Center! The Volunteer Concierge is responsible for the daily activities of the concierge desk. The activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Answer the main phone line for the History Colorado Center and respond to questions or transfer calls to appropriate staff members.
  • Check out an iPad each shift from the Membership Coordinator to assist with answering questions, looking up information, etc.
  • Greet, direct, and check-in business visitors.
  • Serve as the will-call desk for pre-purchased tickets.
  • Manage the wheelchair check-out.
  • Respond to guest inquiries and answer questions about the History Colorado Center, State Historical Fund, and Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation.
  • Provide information about the Rendezvous Cafe, the History Colorado Center gift shop, membership and program information, questions about exhibits and other History Colorado Center related topics.
  • Provide guests with information about parking, cab services, RTD, cultural attractions, and things to do while in Denver.
  • Administer and collect guest comment cards.
  • Maintain display materials.
  • Other duties as appropriate that deal with providing customer service to guests.

Desired Skills:

Strong customer service skills are required. The ideal candidate will have a vast knowledge of the History Colorado Center as well as other Denver cultural attractions. The volunteer concierge must have the time to research and stay up-to-date on Denver events, and attend all trainings. The volunteer concierge must be able to sit for 4 hours at a desk and walk business guests to the security area to check-in as needed. Must be able to answer the phone line and look up information on the iPad or in the provided concierge manual.

Living West Facilitator

Job description:

Living West facilitators will work with visitors within the Living West exhibit, including multi-generational audiences visiting informally. Volunteers will facilitate a touch cart featuring 3 different programs that touch on main exhibits themes. Programs are designed to be adaptable to audience, and volunteers will have the flexibility to choose their desired program from the cart. Living West facilitators will also monitor supplies and interactives within the exhibit to ensure that everything is running as intended. Training on customer service, exhibit content, and program facilitation will be provided.

Make and Take Crafts Facilitator

Help make history fun and engaging for families. We are looking for volunteers to staff our hands-on crafts. Volunteers will be responsible for learning the daily craft and associated content and teaching that content and craft to family visitors. The craft room volunteers will work with staff facilitators.

Museum Host Volunteer

Job Description:
The Guest Services Department is seeking volunteers to enhance the visitor experience. The host will greet and direct museum visitors and guests and help guests orient themselves to the building. This position roams throughout all museum galleries with the intent and purpose of interacting with all museum guests during their visit. For example, the Museum Host may spend time in the Anschutz Hamilton Hall, greeting visitors and helping them use the time machines or navigate to the exhibit galleries. Then they may walk through the first and second floor galleries, checking on visitors and answering questions that may come up. They may also check in and interact with volunteer and staff facilitators, resetters, performers, and so on.

The host will help serve the mission of History Colorado by encouraging visitors to find wonder and meaning in our past during their visit and ensure that all visitors feel welcome, safe, and smart while they are at the museum.

Duties Include:

  • Be knowledgeable about all museum activities such as programs, events, classes, and museum theater performances.
  • Answer questions and provide assistance to museum visitors, making suggestions about exhibits and helping facilitate the visitor experience.

Volunteers facilitate a hands-on, fun learning experience and work with students through gallery-based programming which involves facilitating a high quality learning experience at each History Station.

Job Description:
Do you enjoy working as a team, interacting with the public, and being an ambassador of fun? Special Event Volunteers offer a customer service experience at our membership, community, and fundraising events that visitors will never forget. Our annual events, such as Colorado Day (August 1), Night at the Museum (first Saturday of November), Día del Niño (last Sunday of April), and more require volunteer assistance. This is the perfect opportunity for anyone interested in bringing history to life for our visitors.

Summer Teen Volunteer Program

Looking for something fun to do this summer?  Have you ever wondered what it would be like to work in a museum? Sign up to volunteer for History Colorado’s Summer Teen Volunteer Program!  Volunteers will provide customer service to visitors in our atrium Wildflowers, Wild Places summer pop-up installation.  Assist visitors as they explore the giant inflatable flowers and help tell stories about Colorado’s public lands and how they came to be. Volunteers will invite visitors to pollinate the flowers using a giant interactive beehive. Each summer teen volunteer will also be tasked with imagining what they would do in a similar type of installation and present that idea at our end of summer celebration event.

Duties:

  • Assist visitors in using the interactive beehive and make & take crafts
  • Interact with visitors of all ages and provide excellent customer service
  • Gain knowledge of Colorado public lands to share with visitors
  • Organize and maintain the interactive components in the display
  • Work independently to create a presentation about what you imagine could be a great future atrium installation.
  • Attend end of Summer Celebration event (August 9th, 2019)

Summer Teen Volunteer Requirements:

  • Must be 14-18 years of age
  • Must be comfortable interacting with people of various ages and backgrounds
  • Available to commit to 1 shift/week  from May 25 – August 9, 2019 (shifts are available daily from 11 AM – 2 PM)
  • Able to attend the mandatory orientation/training on May 10th, 2019 from 4 - 5 PM

Temporary Exhibit Gallery Host

Desired Schedule (minimum hour/week, day, hours, etc): 

Shifts available from 11:00 am-2:00 pm daily. Must do two shifts per month during the duration of the exhibit. Opt out model. Volunteer will pick their dates in advance and have a chance to opt out if can’t make that shift within 24 hours notice.

Temporary Gallery Hosts are friendly, positive, enthusiastic, and flexible volunteers who recognize the needs of our guests and help ensure they have an enjoyable experience. They provide excellent customer service by greeting guests, helping guests plan their visit, providing information as the guest transitions through the exhibit, answering questions regarding content, and facilitating educational experiences.  This position roams through the gallery with the intent and purpose of interacting with museum guests during their visit.

As a Temporary Exhibit Gallery Host, you will get to learn about new subjects based on which temporary exhibits the History Colorado Center opens. Each exhibit will relate to Colorado history. Gallery Hosts will train for all exhibits and will facilitate multiple exhibits when they are running concurrently. 

Duties Include: 

  • Answer questions and provide assistance to museum visitors
  • Help facilitate the visitor experience
  • Assist guests through exhibit interactive(s)--if there are any
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of exhibit and interactive(s)--if there are any
  • Lead informal/impromptu tours of the exhibit

Youth Advisory Council

The History Colorado Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is a group of teens from across the state whose goal is to increase youth involvement in History Colorado and its community museums by planning special events and creating opportunities for young history enthusiasts.

What is the age range for YAC? The age range is 11-19.

How long will each member serve on the council? Members will serve a term of two years.

When will YAC meet during the year? Meetings will be held from on the second Saturday of each month from 12:30 - 2:30 PM.

Where are meetings going to be held? All meetings will be held virtually, although members from the same area can meet at their community museums to plan events and work on YAC projects together.

Do I have to volunteer at the museum to be a part of the YAC? No, you do not have to be a volunteer any History Colorado community museum to join the YAC. The Youth Advisory Council is considered to be a volunteer position itself, and thus does not require any prior involvement in the History Colorado museums. However, we do expect all accepted members to volunteer at a certain number of community events at their museum(s).

The Guest Services Department is seeking Colorado history enthusiasts to enhance the visitor experience in our exhibit Zoom In: The Centennial State in 100 Objects. Zoom In! highlights 100 powerful artifacts to see how Colorado became Colorado. Culled from the vast collections of History Colorado, every object on view had a role in shaping our state—from the age of the Paleoindians to Jack Swigert’s Apollo 13 flight suit and beyond. The host will greet museum visitors, help guests orient themselves to the exhibit, and maintain and re-set any interactive components in the exhibition. Volunteers will also have the opportunity to lead impromptu and informal tours throughout their shift to any visitor interested in a more in-depth interpretation of the exhibit. These facilitated experiences will help audiences engage with our core exhibit more thoroughly than if they explored on their own, including behind-the-scenes information not mentioned on our labels.
