AmeriCorps 2021 Program

History Colorado is seeking applicants for the K2H Civic Futures AmeriCorps Program to help expand educational opportunities for Colorado students through the agency’s museums statewide. The K2H Americorps program supports civic learning and engagement programs in K-12 or community-based sites.


K2H Civic Futures Liaison: History Colorado Center Learning Experiences Department

Stipend: This is a unique opportunity to work and learn as an AmeriCorps volunteer - in a capacity building function- for the History Colorado Center in Denver, Colorado. As a K2H Civic Futures Mentor, this 1,700 hour full time, full year volunteer position receive a living stipend of $14,000 and an education award of ~$6,000 upon successful completion of the program.

The Liaison will work together with our Learning Experience Department team on both off and on-site educational programming and capacity building. The AmeriCorps member will act as the main contact for Hands on History after-school programs for the History Colorado Community Museums, and will work to recruit new schools and students to the program.

This position is 1,700 hours, part-time, around 30 hours per week with required weekday availability.


  • Coordination and maintenance of trunk & artifact kit rental program
  • Coordination of onsite check in for in person programs, such as field trips, during the summer and school year - Support & coordination of Learning Experiences program logistics, including virtual programs - Work with Classroom Programs Manager to develop content, marketing materials, and external communications.
  • Work in tandem with site directors to build audiences for all programs with a focus on schools, Hands on History, and field trips
  • Assist in community engagement programs and activities.
  • Research funding opportunities with Philanthropy department for sustainability of programs
  • Additional duties as assigned

Makerspace: Build! Volunteer

Join our Education team as an AmeriCorps member at the History Colorado Center! Volunteers will work with our education staff at the History Colorado to provide direct support by supporting educational programs for school-age children, assisting in museum operations, and in the planning and implementation of programs, specifically our new CoCreate: Build! Makerspace. The volunteer will encourage, facilitate, and organize activities for visitors within the makerspace.

The AmeriCorps members will be able to develop an understanding of guest services and program development within a museum setting while gaining a fundamental understanding of museum operations. Members must be enthusiastic, hardworking, with excellent organizational and communication skills, have either formal or informal experience working with school aged children ages 5 to 16, and have a desire to learn about education in a museum setting.

At its heart, History Colorado fosters cultural understanding, preserves and protects the physical, cultural, and emotional places that are important to our communities, and encourages appreciation of what makes Colorado Colorado. AmeriCorps members will help with making that work possible.

Colorado Stories Facilitator Volunteer

Job Description:

The Colorado Stories Facilitator works within our Colorado Stories exhibit as part of the education department, and facilitates any one of several different activities within the exhibit that are designed to offer a hands on experience and further the learning and enjoyment of our visitors of all ages, but primarily with family audiences. Volunteers will be stationed in exhibit gallery, facilitating touch-cart or prescribed family programs.

Training on customer service, exhibit content, program facilitation, general museum education, and intergenerational learning theory will be provided.

Job Description:

Our exhibit, Destination Colorado, in the History Colorado Center, is highly engaging and  interactive. As such, it needs extra love and attention! 

Be the general store owner within the now ghost town, Keota, Colorado. Step back in time when Keota was a flourishing community and the town’s general store was at the center of that  community. Help visitors collect eggs for “money” to buy groceries. Ensure the visitor has a great experience by resetting the exhibit, answering visitor’s questions informally, keeping lines moving in high-traffic areas, and conducting exhibit maintenance sweeps (reviewing exhibits, picking up trash, reporting problems with the interactives, burned-out light bulbs, or broken exhibit elements).

Job Description:

Engagement Guides will lead scheduled adult tours of the exhibits through the group sales program. This facilitated experience will help audiences engage with our core exhibits more thoroughly than if they explored on their own, including behind-the-scenes information not mentioned in our labels. Experiences will be tailored to specific audiences and Engagement Guides will need to adapt based on the audience and their needs. Tours are scheduled as needed based on request from groups or evening events through rentals.

Training will be provided to include engaging visitors through an inquiry-based method that allows visitors to evaluate and experience the content of the exhibitions and partake in the learning process. Additional training on customer service, exhibit content, general Colorado history, experience facilitation, inquiry, and basic museum education will be provided.

Living West Facilitator

Job description:

Living West facilitators will work with visitors within the Living West exhibit, including multi-generational audiences visiting informally. Volunteers will facilitate a touch cart featuring 3 different programs that touch on main exhibits themes. Programs are designed to be adaptable to audience, and volunteers will have the flexibility to choose their desired program from the cart. Living West facilitators will also monitor supplies and interactives within the exhibit to ensure that everything is running as intended. Training on customer service, exhibit content, and program facilitation will be provided.

Make and Take Crafts Facilitator

Help make history fun and engaging for families. We are looking for volunteers to staff our hands-on crafts. Volunteers will be responsible for learning the daily craft and associated content and teaching that content and craft to family visitors. The craft room volunteers will work with staff facilitators.

Job Description:
The Guest Services Department is seeking volunteers to enhance the visitor experience. The host will greet and direct museum visitors and guests and help guests orient themselves to the building. This position roams throughout all museum galleries with the intent and purpose of interacting with all museum guests during their visit. For example, the Museum Host may spend time in the Anschutz Hamilton Hall, greeting visitors and helping them use the time machines or navigate to the exhibit galleries. Then they may walk through the first and second floor galleries, checking on visitors and answering questions that may come up. They may also check in and interact with volunteer and staff facilitators, resetters, performers, and so on.

The host will help serve the mission of History Colorado by encouraging visitors to find wonder and meaning in our past during their visit and ensure that all visitors feel welcome, safe, and smart while they are at the museum.

Duties Include:

  • Be knowledgeable about all museum activities such as programs, events, classes, and museum theater performances.
  • Answer questions and provide assistance to museum visitors, making suggestions about exhibits and helping facilitate the visitor experience.

Research Center Registration Desk Support

Job description:

The Hart Research Center is seeking volunteers to assist at the registration desk – our portal to the collections! Duties include greeting visitors, registering new researchers, answering questions about research center policies, pulling requests, re-shelving collection items, collecting statistics, receiving payment for copies, and answering the phone.

Excellent customer service skills are required as this person provides the first interaction for researchers. Our registration volunteers also have the opportunity to work on a side project while at the desk, if desired. Examples include collection inventories and transcribing ledger books. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in learning more about the historic materials in the HC collection.

Volunteers facilitate a hands-on, fun learning experience and work with students through gallery-based programming which involves facilitating a high quality learning experience at each History Station.

Job Description:
Do you enjoy working as a team, interacting with the public, and being an ambassador of fun? Special Event Volunteers offer a customer service experience at our membership, community, and fundraising events that visitors will never forget. Our annual events, such as Colorado Day (August 1), Night at the Museum (first Saturday of November), Día del Niño (last Sunday of April), and more require volunteer assistance. This is the perfect opportunity for anyone interested in bringing history to life for our visitors.

The host will help serve the mission of History Colorado by encouraging visitors to find wonder and meaning in our past during their visit and ensure that all visitors feel welcome, safe, and smart while they are at the museum.

Front Desk Engagement Volunteer

Our front desk engagement volunteers are the first point of contact with the public. In this role, volunteers will greet museum visitors, collect admission fees, provide membership information, help sell retail items, answer questions, and provide support to the Guest Services staff. Are you friendly and enjoy talking to people? This could be the position for you!

Desired Schedule: Shifts are available daily from 9:45 - 1 PM Monday-Saturday.  Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of  3 shifts per month as an opt out system.
