In 1907, Frank and Maggie Burns sold their Iowa land, loaded the family and belongings in a railroad car and made the move to Grand Junction to grow peaches. Their daughter, Lois, remembered that not a sprig of grass was on the land when the trees were planted. In 1918, Lois married Nelson Newton Phillips and they bought a fifteen acre pear orchard.
