Delta County

In 1907, Frank and Maggie Burns sold their Iowa land, loaded the family and belongings in a railroad car and made the move to Grand Junction to grow peaches.  Their daughter, Lois, remembered that not a sprig of grass was on the land when the trees were planted.  In 1918, Lois married Nelson Newton Phillips and they bought a fifteen acre pear orchard.  That orchard increased in acreage, included peaches, pears and apples and stayed in the family until the 1990's.  By the 1980’s, Grand Junction was growing and the farm was engulfed by development.  The third generation, Dean and Irene Phillips and Shirley Phillips Ela and William Ela, bought orchard land near Hotchkiss, where the fourth generation, Steve Ela, still farms today.  Through the years, the family has sold fruit locally, hauled and sold fruit in Denver, and worked with various packing sheds to ship fruit nationally.  The family has always believed in innovation and experimentation.  Their current farm has been certified organic for  25 years.  They take pride in focusing on honesty, flavor and quality as evidenced by customers that return year after year.
