Dawn DiPrince portrait

Borderlands + Suffrage in Colorado - Online

Join us on Zoom as we move our great history talks online. In this new, participatory format we will hear from Dawn DiPrince, Chief Operating Officer at History Colorado for a brief lecture, followed by discussion.

DiPrince will explore the myths about and the impact of southern Colorado on women's suffrage in the Centennial state -- with a specific focus on the rights of borderland residents in the midst of land dispossession, and leaders like Las Animas County's Casmiro Barela and Huerfano County's Agepeta Vigil.

Manuel Gonzales, Jr.

Canciones de Mi Padre

Join us on Zoom as we move our great history talks online. In this participatory format we will hear from Manuel Gonzalez, Albuquerque Poet Laureate Emeritus.

Manuel Gonzalez, Jr. is the son of Manny Gonzalez of the Northern New Mexico band, Manny and the Casanovas. Manny and the Casanovas were originators and pioneers of what is considered to be “New Mexico Music" --- music that has a unique and original sound and history. In this lecture, Manuel Jr will delve into how the music and culture of northern new mexico has inspired him as a poet. Manuel Jr will share his work, family stories, and a writing prompt so we can each explore our own roots and inspirations.

David Hayes-Bautista

Cinco de Mayo: An American Tradition

Join us on Zoom as we move our great history talks online. In this new, participatory format we will hear from Dr. David Hayes-Bautista, professor of Public Health and Medicine, and director of the Center for Latino Health & Culture at the School of Medicine at UCLA.

Dr. Hayes-Bautista will discuss Cinco de Mayo --- a holiday commemorating the Mexican victory over the French at Puebla in 1862. He will explain why the holiday is not Mexican at all, but rather an American one, created by Latinos in California during the mid-nineteenth century. Hayes-Bautista will examine how the meaning of Cinco de Mayo has shifted over time and how it continues to reflect the aspirations of a community that is engaged, empowered, and expanding.

American Democracy

Gale Norton: Federalism & Democracy

James Madison said The Constitution wasn't a national or federal framework of laws, "but a composition of both." In the 21st century, how is that balance maintained? What about in national emergencies, like a war, in an economic crisis---or a pandemic? And when are populist demands a strain on the separation of powers? Former Colorado attorney general and George W. Bush Administration Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton describes how federalism---the operation of the distinct branches unique to American government---makes up our ideas about democracy.

Anthony Grimes: Stretch — The Future of Making America a True Democracy

With an activist's background and an artist's insight, filmmaker and founder of Denver Freedom Riders Anthony Grimes examines the historic year that was 2020, our local and broader democracy, where we might be going in the near future, and where we should be going in the 365 days to come.

What does a truly democratic America look like? Can these borders ever become a home for black people, and poor people, and the disenfranchised? How will we know when this has happened—and what happens if it is deemed impossible? A filmed talk by Grimes will open the presentation, followed by live conversation and Q&A about the collective struggle to stretch American democracy in years past, this year, and for the future. Sit back and relax or sit up and lean in—this upbeat, unusual occasion won't contribute to your zoom fatigue. Participants will exit the experience energized and equipped for the year ahead.

American Democracy

Amanda Henderson: Faith and Democracy

Where do religious beliefs and practices intersect with democracy? Is there anything we can learn about efforts to live together across differences from divergent religious communities?  What is the true, complicated story about religious pluralism in American founding and history? And finally, can the principles of religious pluralism in action give us better, more resilient framework for a democratic pluralism in America?

Join Amanda Henderson, Director of the Institute for Religion, Politics & Culture at Iliff as she brings local commentators from different perspectives---Iliff faculty member the Reverend Dr. Jennifer Leath, and the president of the Denver Seminary, Dr. Mark Young--- to explore the history (and possible futures) of religion and the democratic tradition in America.
