American Democracy

Maeve Conran & David Barsamian: Media & Democracy

What if the biggest challenges we have facing American democracy are found in the ways we communicate with one another---that is, our media? KGNU Public Radio's Maeve Conran and audio archivist and journalist David Barsamian give their take on the state of our various media, and what we can do about making it more about people and less about profit.

Juston Cooper: Justice & Democracy

Juston Cooper, deputy director of the Colorado Criminal Justice Reform Coalition, talks about what democracy actually means once you’ve been incarcerated. And what about people returning from incarceration? Are they allowed “back in” to our democracy, or are they supposed to stay on the “inside” forever?

Richard Bell: Hamilton, the Founders, and Democracy

See tickets

Would you like to be the smartest Hamilton fan in town? Then don’t miss Dr. Richard Bell and “Hamilton, the Founders, and Democracy” on Thursday, October 1.

Prepare to clutch your pearls, because real-life Alexander Hamilton barely knew Aaron Burr during the Revolutionary War, and their duel didn’t really occur until four years after the election of 1800. But don’t cancel your subscription to Disney+ just yet. After all, the truth should never get in the way of a good musical—and Dr. Richard Bell has so much more to offer than just the facts.

Important note about the tickets: Series package includes access to all 1pm and 7pm lectures. Lecture times may vary, so check each date before you purchase.

American Democracy

Astra Taylor: So, Just What Is a Democracy Anyway?

Is democracy just a philosopher’s pipe dream, or a way of life we can really live in our workplaces, our neighborhoods, and our political life? Astra Taylor, an acclaimed essayist (The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Nation) and filmmaker (Zizek!, Examined Life, What Is Democracy?), discusses our hopes for a democratic future in our unsettled present.

We are excited to partner with our friends at Denver Film to bring this presenter to you. Their new platform offers the flexibility to enjoy this presentation at a time of your choosing. On the date of the event at 7pm, you will be able to access Astra Taylor's film What Is Democracy? as well as a conversation with Taylor on the topic: So, Just What Is a Democracy Anyway?

Anza in the Borderlands: Conflict and Coalition in Southern Colorado

Join us on Zoom as we move our great history talks online. In this new, participatory format we'll hear from Nick Saenz of Adams State University for about 25 minutes and engage in discussion on the topic.

Traditional historical accounts of the 1779 Spanish, Ute, and Apache campaign against the Comanches situate the leadership of Juan Bautista de Anza at their core. "Anza in the Borderlands" revisits this narrative to uncover a hidden history of conflict and coalition.
