The brick Queen Anne house was constructed in 1888 by Piper Brothers contractor/builder from the design of Patrick P. Mills, Pueblo architect, for Mr. Timothy George McCarthy.  McCarthy was a prominent businessman in the Pueblo area who also had an influential political career.  He came to government positions, he was elected to the State Senate in 1907.

Completed by the Pueblo Bridge Company in 1913, this vehicular bridge over the Arkansas River was supposed to be a steel structure.  The design was changed to a three-span Luten arch when the steel could not be delivered prior to high water in 1913.

The 1908 Italianate style Santa Fe Hospital represented the historical development of health services by the Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe Railroad.

The creation of the Kit Carson Hotel represents an important part of the social history of La Junta during the Great Depression.

Uravan helped give birth to the nuclear age when in 1912 the Joe Jr. Mill began processing carnotite ore into its base elements of radium, vanadium, and uranium.

The Carriage Works is the last known false-front, wood-frame building in Montrose County. Business owners in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries erected these low-cost yet substantial-looking buildings, lending their Western towns an air of prosperity and stability. With its upper false-front parapet wall that obscures a front-gable roof and a decorative façade constructed of higher-quality materials than the other sides, Carriage Works typifies this architectural style, which eventually gave way to buildings of brick and stone.
