International Archaeology Day logo 2021

2021 International Archaeology Day Expo

Joins us in celebrating Colorado’s colorful past at the 2021 International Archaeology Day Expo. Fun for all ages!  The 10th International Archaeology Day celebration is a free expo to learn, explore, and experience archaeology.  Professional and avocational archaeologists from around the state will demonstrate, discuss, and bring to life the cultures of Colorado’s past. 

Outdoors, there will be informational booths, demonstrations – including a flint knapper, hands-on activities, poster shows, kid’s area, and Archaic snack stand. The expo will be held at Roxborough Intermediate School, 7370 Village Cir E, Roxborough, CO, 80125.  The outdoor activities will be held 9:00 am – 3:00 pm.

Professional lectures will be presented by Jeff Brzezinski, Jack Warner, and Anna Cordova.  These will be held indoors (masks and social distancing required) at 10:00, noon, and 2:00pm.  Reservation required for lectures (see sign-up links below).

Nearby visits to Roxborough State Park, Lamb Spring Archaeological Preserve, and Ken-Caryl Ranch historic and archaeological sites will feature tours and hands-on activities.  Reservation are required for the site tours (see sign-up links below).  Note:  Roxborough SP activities are free with park entrance.

Lamb Spring Archaeological Preserve

Lamb Spring is the only Paleoindian archaeological site in the Denver metro area open to the public.  There is a short walk to a site where several digs have uncovered bones of mammoths and other prehistoric mammals as well as Cody era stone tools.

Roxborough State Park

Roxborough State Park is a National Archaeological District with over 60 prehistoric sites in the park’s boundaries, mostly of Archaic and Woodland eras.  The park has received the State Archaeologist Award for its commitment to preservation and public education. You can also enjoy the Park's "Walk Through Time Poster Show" as well as Artifacts of the Park on display in our visitor center.

Ken-Caryl Historical Society

The historic Bradford house was built in 1860 and the nearby “Bradford II” site was the source of artifacts more than 6000 years old. Ken-Caryl history experts will explain the history and pre-history of this beautiful hogback area.

Dr. Michael Sawyer

The Buffalo Soldiers and Service in Times of Injustice

Join us on Zoom as we move our great history talks online. In this lecture, Dr. Michael Sawyer will present "The Buffalo Soldiers and Service in Times of Injustice."

After the Civil War, Congress established six all-black regiments (consolodated to four shortly after) to help rebuild the country after the Civil War. One of these units, the 9th cavalry of the United States Army, was garrisoned at Fort Garland from 1876-1879.
