InSights & InPerson - Connections: Phil Carson on the first recorded ascent of Pike's Peak

Based on naturalist Edwin James’ unpublished diary and personal letters, which included geographic descriptions and notes on geology and botany, author Phil Carson retraced Edwin James’s ascent of Pikes Peak in July 1820 – 200 years ago this summer.

James made his climb as a member of Major Long’s expedition to the Rockies that summer, one of the first American expeditions into the West to bring trained scientists to document a region largely unknown to a young nation.

Based on his forthcoming article for The Colorado Magazine, this InSights & InPerson Connections program with Phil Carson will feature a pre-recorded lecture followed up with a live Q&A session on August 19th at 6pm. Come with questions about James' ascent of Pike's Peak along with what it is like to conduct research in the archives.
