Accessibility at History Colorado Center
At the History Colorado Center, we want all of our visitors to feel welcome. Here’s how we try to be accessible for everyone.
If you have additional questions you can email us or call (303) 866-2394.
Mobility & Entering the Building
Covered parking is available at the Art Garage, adjacent to the Art Studios at 1200 Lincoln Street. Daily fees apply. We do not validate parking. Parking is NOT available in the covered lot right next to the museum.
There is also metered parking on the streets surrounding the museum, and a person with a valid disability placard or plate may park where there is metered parking without paying, for up to 4 hours or the amount of time on the meter, whichever is greater.
If you need, we also have a loading dock on 12th Avenue between Lincoln and Broadway (see image below) with a ramp that leads to the main entrance.
Barrier-free doors with push-button entry are located at the museum’s main entrance on Broadway and side entrance on 12th Avenue. Elevators are located on the north side of the building.
Wheelchairs & Mobility Scooter
You may check out a wheelchair or motorized scooter at the Admissions desk; they’re available on a first-come first-served basis. An ID is required. Wheelchair size is standard with a 250 lb. weight capacity. The motorized scooter size is standard with a 400 lb. weight capacity and ability to hold an oxygen tank. Please note we only have one motorized scooter.
Accessible Restrooms
Restrooms on each floor contain an accessible stall and ADA push-buttons. We also have family restrooms at the northeast corner of the first, second, and fourth floors.
Nursing Room
We have a nursing room in the northeast corner of the third floor; please inquire at the Admissions desk.
Service Animals
Service animals—animals that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability—are allowed throughout the museum. Pets and emotional support animals are not considered service animals and are not allowed.
Hearing
The History Colorado Center has installed an assistive listening system known as a hearing loop in the Colorado Room, where most of our lectures and public programs take place. This will allow people with low to no hearing to hear our programs easily and clearly with the use of their own hearing aid or cochlear implant with a T-coil (telecoil) setting that has been activated. At this time, we do not have hearing loops installed in other locations throughout the History Colorado Center.
If you have a hearing aid, you likely have a feature known as a telecoil or “T-coil” in it. This feature is not automatically activated by audiologists or hearing instrument specialists, but is present in most hearing aids and all implants on the market today. Someone using a hearing aid will be able to use the hearing loop assistive system by simply switching to the T-coil program on their hearing aid or cochlear implant. Most hearing devices have telecoils, but the program must be activated prior to the event. If you are unsure if your hearing aid has a telecoil program or whether it is activated, contact your hearing provider. We encourage everyone with hearing aids to check with their hearing provider sooner rather than later, so that when you attend your next lecture, you can use the system with your hearing aids or cochlear implants.
Receivers with headphones will be available for people to use if they don’t have hearing aids, or if their hearing aid does not have a telecoil in it. To request a receiver with headphones, please inquire at the technology booth at the back of the Colorado Room once you arrive for your program.
For more information on telecoils, visit the Center for Hearing Access.
Visual Assistance
We are excited to offer a service for blind and low- vision Coloradans through a partnership with Aira, an app that provides live on-demand visual interpreting through human-to-human assistance. Aira is free for up to 30 minutes per session while navigating State of Colorado owned and managed locations, including the History Colorado Center! If you need more than 30 minutes, you are welcome to have multiple sessions during your visit. To learn more about Aira, including frequently asked questions about the service, visit the Governor's Office of Information Technology (OIT) Aira webpage.
Sensory
We have noise-canceling headphones which may be checked out at the admissions desk, free of charge and on a first-come first-served basis. Quiet spaces are available in the member’s lounge on the fourth floor, or the nursing room in the northeast corner of the third floor.
You can download a social story here for young guests who would like to know in advance what they will be experiencing.
We also have regularly scheduled Low Sensory Mornings, where the museum will be closed to the general public, attendance limited, and sounds in the exhibits turned down. Admission is free and space is limited. Please register in advance through the event listings below.
Group Visit
Groups with disabilities/special needs cost $6 per participant. Caregivers and staff are free.
Purchase tickets online in advance or in-person at the front desk. If you have additional questions, please email reservations@state.co.us or call 303-866-2396.
