The Center for Colorado Women’s History Volunteer Opportunities

Located next door to the Denver Art Museum, volunteers at the Center for Colorado Women's History support our mission as tour guides of our historic spaces, engaging visitor center volunteers to our tours and gift shop, as well as field trip facilitators for our student program, 1918.

Desired Schedule:

One shift (3 hours) per month is required. Two to four shifts per month are encouraged. Available hours daily, Monday through Saturday 10:15 to 1:00 or Monday through Sunday 1:00 to 4:00. The museum is closed to the public on Tuesdays  and Wednesdays but may request volunteer assistance with school tours or special events on those days.

All volunteers are also encouraged to participate in at least one special event per year, such as Colorado Day, Night at the Museums, Doors Open Denver or holiday teas. These events allow us to expand our audience and reach people in different ways. Front Desk volunteers can participate by volunteering at the front desk, learning a very abbreviated version of the tour, serving teas or in other ways for special events.

Job Description:

The Center for Colorado Women’s History needs volunteers to work in the gallery and visitor center welcoming visitors and completing gift shop and admission sales.

Duties Include:

  • Providing customer service to all museum and gallery visitors (informing the public about the museum tour schedule, giving directions, suggesting sightseeing opportunities and restaurants)
  • Acting as an ambassador to other local museums, attractions and Denver
  • Answering questions about gallery displays as well as the history of the home
  • Answering inquiries about women’s history, which may include directly visitors to online resources or the Hart Library at the History Colorado Center
  • Assisting customers in the gift shop
  • Operating the point of sale system and cash register for all sales of tickets and goods
  • Assisting visitors with online ticket reservations.
  • Recording all visitation and sales accurately and thoroughly
  • Answering the phone
  • Taking reservations for group tours and special events; taking credit card payments over the phone

Desired Skills:

Front Desk should be organized, personable, and comfortable multitasking. All Visitor Center representatives are required to use office equipment such as a touch screen cash register, phone and computer. This job might also entail light office work such as filing, collating, and paper cutting. Volunteers should have an interest in Colorado women’s history and the history of early Denver.

One three hour, fifteen minute shift per month required. Two to four shifts per month are encouraged. Available hours daily, Monday through Saturday, and Sunday afternoons 10:15-1:30, 1:15-4:30.

All volunteers are also encouraged to participate in at least one special event per year, such as Colorado Day, Night at the Museums, Doors Open Denver or holiday teas. These events allow us to expand our audience and reach people in different ways. Tour guides may give full or abbreviated tours during events, serve tea or participate in other ways, specific to a particular event. Information about tea roles below.

Job Description:

Tour guides share information with visitors about the people who lived and worked in the historic home, how their lives relate to Colorado women’s history, the architectural and design features of the house and the artifacts. Tour guides at the museum lead all visitors through the 10,000 square foot home and provide tours for groups of 1 - 15 people. Each shift is three hours and fifteen minutes. The maximum number of tours a guide will provide in one day is three.

Desired Skills:

Tour guides should have a knowledge of and passion for history, feel comfortable speaking in front of groups, and be physically able to stand, walk, climb stairs and talk for up to three hours in a row.

1918 Field Trip Facilitator

Desired schedule:

Field trips are scheduled on a case by case basis and will be updated on Volgistics throughout the school season. The majority of field trips run in November, February-May and can be in-person or virtual. Programs can begin as early as 9 am and as late as 2 pm. In-person and virtual field trips occur on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Job Description:

As a 1918 School Programs Guide, you will be facilitating conversation and guiding 3rd and 4th grade students as they immerse themselves in the year 1918. With the guidance of character cards based on people who lived and worked in the  Byers-Evans house, students will reenact preparations for a family dinner. Students will use historic props and primary sources like newspaper clippings from the era to learn about the program’s three key themes of 1918: World War I, the Spanish Flu pandemic, and Women’s Suffrage, while connecting them to the experiences of the individuals in the house.

Desired Skills:

Field Trip facilitators should have a knowledge of and passion for history, feel comfortable speaking in front of groups, and be physically able to stand, walk, climb stairs and talk for up to two hours in a row. Comfort and previous experience working with young children encouraged.

Tea Volunteers

Desired schedule:

Teas are hosted in the Fall, Winter, and Spring. Public teas host two tea seatings for each tea date. A morning tea seating starts with a tour at 10:30 AM with guests sitting for tea by 11:30 AM. Our second seating starts with a tour at 1:30 PM with guests sitting for tea by 2:30 PM. Each seating is a volunteer shift.

Job Description:

Tea Servers prepare the tables for tea service, plate the catered food, brew tea, serve guests, and provide clean up. Typically, this role is three hours for one tea seating.

Tea Tour Guides & Server Assistants provide the tour for all or some of the tea guests and assist the tea server in serving guests. After the tour, they escort guests to the program room, help with seating and they pour the first round of tea before assisting the Tea Server with other needs. When guests are ready to leave, this role escorts guests back to the gift shop. This role is about three hours for one tea seating.

Desired Skills:

Tea Tour Guides must be previously trained to give house tours and be comfortable guiding up to 15 people through the house. Tour guides should have a knowledge of and passion for history, feel comfortable speaking in front of groups, and be physically able to stand, walk, climb stairs.

Tea Servers should be personable, comfortable handling food, pouring tea and assisting with dishes and clean up. This position requires walking, standing, carrying plates and other dishware and navigating a room with several tables close together.
