Desired Schedule:

One shift (2 1/2 or 4 hours) per month is required.  Two to four shifts per month encouraged. Available hours daily, Monday through Friday 10:00 to 2:00 or 2:00 to 4:30.

Job Description:

The Center for Colorado Women’s History at the Byers-Evans House needs volunteers to work in the gallery and visitor center welcoming visitors and completing gift shop and admission sales.

Duties Include:

  • Providing customer service to all museum and gallery visitors (informing the public about the museum tour schedule, giving directions, suggesting sightseeing opportunities and restaurants)

  • Acting as an ambassador to other local museums, attractions and Denver

  • Answering questions about gallery displays as well as the history of the home

  • Answering inquiries about women’s history, which may include directly visitors to online resources or the Hart Library at the History Colorado Center

  • Assisting customers in the gift shop

  • Operating the cash register for all sales of tickets and goods.

  • Recording all visitation and sales accurately and thoroughly

  • Answering the phone

  • Taking reservations for group tours and special events; taking credit card payments over the phone

Desired Skills:

Visitor Center representatives should be organized, personable, and comfortable multitasking. All Visitor Center representatives are required to use office equipment such as a cash register, phone and computer. This job might also entail light office work such as filing, collating, and paper cutting. Volunteers should have an interest in Colorado women’s history and the history of early Denver.

Desired Schedule:

One three hour, fifteen minute shift per month required.  Two to four shifts per month encouraged.  Available hours daily, Monday through Saturday, and Sunday afternoons 10:15-1:30, 1:15-4:30.

Job Description:

Tour guides share information with visitors about life in early Denver, the people who lived and worked in the home and the changes to the house over time.  Tours includes information about the two historically prominent families who lived in the home and the staff who worked here, the architectural and design features of the house and the artifacts.  Tour guides at the Byers-Evans House lead all visitors through the 10,000 square foot home and provide tours for groups of 1 - 15 people.  Each shift is three hours and fifteen minutes. The maximum number of tours a guide will provide in one day is three.

Desired Skills:

Tour guides should have a knowledge of and passion for history, feel comfortable speaking in front of groups, and be physically able to stand, walk, climb stairs and talk for up to three hours in a row.

An Afternoon Into the Past: Education Docent

Desired schedule:

AAITP is offered Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. year-round, but is very popular in the months of April and May.  Most docents work 1 shift per month in the slower season and 4- 8 shifts per month in April and May.

Job Description:

Education docents work with our school program, "An Afternoon Into the Past".  AAITP is an interactive, hands-on program designed for 3rd and 4th grade students.  Students take on characters of Evans family members and friends and get the chance  to use certain prop items throughout the house.  Docents guide students through the house and facilitate their learning by instructing them in using prop artifacts and assisting them with presenting their characters to their class.

The maximum number of students assigned to one docent is 19, and shifts last between 1 1/2 and 4 hours.  The maximum number of school tours given in one day is two.

Desired Skills:

Education docents have a knowledge and passion for history, should feel comfortable talking to large groups of children, physically able to stand, walk, climb stairs and talk for up to three hours in a row, and able to monitor the collections closely while simultaneously giving a tour.

Byers-Evans House Museum Tea Volunteer

Desired schedule:

Available hours are some Saturdays, Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays-seasonally and by request, typically noon to 3:30.

Job Description:

The Byers-Evans House Museum seeks volunteers to assist with our seasonal and special themed teas. Teas are a favorite program among members of History Colorado and help serve the mission of the Byers-Evans House Museum by encouraging visitors to share the experience of this historic home and fascinating time period with friends and family. Themed teas may also include programs on special topics in Denver’s history and cultural heritage.

Duties Include:

  • Preparing a welcoming space for teas by setting the tables and arranging decorations
  • Welcoming guests and answering questions-tea volunteers will have opportunities to tour the museum and learn more about its history and décor
  • Plating tea and serving, assisting in clearing tables, food is prepared by a caterer and museum staff moves tables and chairs and finishes the major cleaning

Youth Advisory Council

The History Colorado Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is a group of teens from across the state whose goal is to increase youth involvement in History Colorado and its community museums by planning special events and creating opportunities for young history enthusiasts.

What is the age range for YAC?
The age range is 13-19.

How long will each member serve on the council?
Members will serve a term of one year.

When will YAC meet during the year?
Meetings will be held from September through April.

Where are meetings going to be held?
All meetings will be held virtually, although members from the same area can meet at their community museums to plan events and work on YAC projects together.

How many times a month will YAC meet?
YAC will meet once a month, with exceptions if the members are planning an event.

Do I have to volunteer at the museum to be a part of the YAC?
No, you do not have to be a volunteer at the History Colorado Center or any History Colorado community museum to join the YAC. The Youth Advisory Council is considered to be a volunteer position itself, and thus does not require any prior involvement in the History Colorado museums. However, we do expect all accepted members to volunteer at a certain number of community events at their museum(s).

Tea servers should be comfortable standing for long periods and handling food. They should be personable and enjoy serving as hosts for events. Tea servers should be comfortable working in a team and managing a timeline.
