Animas City School

La Plata County

The 1905 Animas City School was the only public school servicing Animas City, a small town north of Durango founded in 1876, until Animas City’s School District #1 was incorporated into Durango’s School District #9 in 1939.

The school continued to function as an elementary school for the community until 1967 and is a good local example of Italianate architecture, featuring a symmetrical façade, vertical orientation, bracketed eaves, and square cupola. A fire in 1919 destroyed the hipped roof, which was replaced with a flat roof that eventually developed structural issues. Several grants from the State Historical Fund in the early 2000s resulted in a reconstructed roof and attic that matches the original design while simultaneously providing state-of-the-art space for the Las Plata County Historical Society’s museum collections.
