The property is associated with the early settlement of the Platte Canyon area of northern Park County.

The main house is on a parcel of land purchased by Ben Tyler in 1884.  The adjacent land, on which the homestead shanty and the other buildings are located, was part of the patent Tyler filed in 1898.
