Bohlender Family Farm

Weld County

The Bohlender Family farm was purchased in 1919 by Jacon Bohlender from his uncle, Fred. In 1920 a horse barn and house were built on the NW corner of the farm, and over the next several years additional buildings such as a dairy barn, chicken house and cattle sheds were constructed. During the depression the dairy couldn’t support the family so Jacobworked in nearby coal mines and his wife, Martha, raised chickens and sold eggs. Through the 1950s the primary source of income was the dairy, with most of the crops used to feed the dairy cows. During that time the dairy income was also supplemented by sugar beets and potatoes. After the death of Jacob, the farm was purchased by his son. In the 1970s there was a shift to beef cattle feeding, with corn and hay grown on the farm to feed the cattle. In about 2003 a center pivot sprinkler was installed. The beef cattle business was discontinued in about 2000. Today the farm is managed by Jacob and Martha’s grand-children, who  inherited the farm after the passing of their father, and they are proud to have kept it in the family for over 100 years!
