Carper Farm

Phillips County

The Carper family farm began August 15th, 1916 when Henry and Annie Stauffer purchased the NW1/4 23-9-47 parcel of land. They built the original home to raise their family of nine children that still stands and is the current residence of Tim & Arlene (Wiebers) Carper. Henry died in 1933, leaving Annie a widow with a debt to the farm. Their son, Clarence, then took over the bank note in 1939.  By 1941, Clarence’s sister, Martha, had married George Carper and relocated their five children (LaVelle, Eileen, Jim (James), Rachel and Carole) to the family homestead.  In 1947, George was gored by a bull and died from his injuries. The next generation stepped in when Martha’s son, Jim, moved his wife, Delores (Bornhoft) to the farm in 1956. They had three children (Tim (Timothy), Gary and Kelly), eventually purchasing it in 1972.  The farm was acquired when Jim’s son, Tim and wife, Arlene, moved to raise their two children (Laura and Doug (Douglas)) to the property in 1991, making them the fourth generation of family to live on the farm.  The hope is that Doug will purchase the homestead in the future making him the fifth generation to live on these 160 acres.  While the farm is no longer operated by descendants, it is cash leased and grows wheat, corn and millet.
