East View Farm & Ranch

Kiowa County

In 1921 Augusta Shalberg and his two sons, Roy and Gilbert moved from Croften, Nebraska to Sheridan Lake, Colorado. Augusta had purchased 160 acres one and one-half miles north of Sheridan Lake. They built a two-story barn and lived in it while the house was being constructed. At that time the farming was done with a team of horses. Their livestock consisted of cows, pigs and chickens. Roy Shalberg married in 1930, he and his wife Lucille, lived the rest of their lives on the farm. They had three children, Charlotte, Merle, and Shirley. Their son Merle was born in 1936 in the original farmhouse. He has lived on the farm all his life except for two years when he served in the U.S Army. Merle married in 1960, he and his wife Carol raised three children, Steve, Greg and Lori. Merle is 85 and has retired from farming but continues to help out wherever he can. Merle and Carol's son Greg, his wife Penni and sons Kyler and Kase live in the remodeled house that was built in 1921. They continue to farm and manage a cow-calf operation. The original brand (reverse L, double quarter circle) has been passed down from generation to generation.
