Hutchinson Ranch and Homestead

Chaffee County

The Hutchinson Ranch dates back to 1868, when it was established by Joseph Sykes Hutchinson and Annabel McPherson to raise cattle.

For six generations, the ranch has remained with their family, who still raises cattle on the homestead. The original main house and ten outbuildings—including barns, a blacksmith shop, a saddle house, a granary, and an additional cabin—still stand, and have been undergoing preservation efforts since they were donated to the Town of Poncha Springs. Guidestone Colorado is using a SHF grant to plan and develop a new education curriculum for K-12 students that will highlight the history and preservation of the Hutchinson Homestead, provide pre- and post-classroom extension activities, and help educators use historic preservation as a means for rich, experience-based social studies education.

The main house at the Hutchinson Ranch and Homestead after restoration funded in part by the State Historical Fund.
