San Juan County

The San Juan County Historical Society is committed to preserving sites in the region, such as the Seven Level Boarding House. The boarding house, locally called the Old Hundred Boarding House, housed miners at the Old Hundred Mine, which was founded by German immigrants who came to the San Juan Mountains in the early 1870s.

The mine remained active until 1908. Over the last century, the property has faced many harsh winters, as ice builds up on the boarding house and bears down on it. Additionally, today, thousands of visitors flock annually to the site to learn more about the history of Colorado mining. With its supports deteriorating from weather and increased visitorship, the structure will not last much longer, so the current grant will allow for repairs to the foundation and sub-structures.
