National and State Register
Pikes Peak
El Paso County
First observed by Zebulon Montgomery Pike in 1806, Pike’s Peak has become one of the best known and most visited mountains in the United States.
Exploited for timber during the Cripple Creek mining days, efforts of the U.S. Forest Service during the 1920s and 1930s helped to reforest the mountainside. It is one of over 30 Colorado mountains exceeding 14,000 feet in elevation. A road and cog railway run to the top, and modern facilities accommodate the many tourists.
