Centennial Farms & Ranches

Purcell Ranch

Weld County

In 1919 George and Luva Reed purchased 160 acres of ranch land from the original owners. They added holdings whenever possible, and the ranch now amounts to more than 4,000 acres. Their daughter Faye married Harry Raven in 1933. Harry and Faye lived in the back of the Purcell post office/gas station, later moving into a small home next-door. They had two daughters, Beverly and Judy.  A new house was finished west of the gas station just after the Blizzard of 1949. The ranch ran cattle operations and registered Quarter Horses. Portions of the town were added to the ranch’s holdings after the Dust Bowl. Dairy cattle were added to the ranch in the mid 1940s when the Raven sisters reached college age, which helped support their educations and both eventually became teachers. Beverly taught in Simla, settling in Cope. Judy taught in Kersey, returning in 1979 to help Faye after Harry’s passing.  Judy married Meryl May in 1981. The couple purchased the ranch from Faye and it became the Purcell Ranch. They continued the tradition of farming Quarter Horses and quality beef, adding land when possible.  Meryl passed in 1999 and Judy maintained the ranch until her passing in June 2019. In 2000, Randy Strain was hired to help run the ranch and continue the tradition.
