Samual C. and Dola B. Coe Homestead

Cheyenne County

Sam and Dola came to Colorado from Illinois in 1913, two days after they were married to join relatives who had already settled homestead claims in the area.  Their first child, Mary, was born on the homestead in 1916.

They moved back and forth between Colorado and Illinois for a number of years before finally settling in Colorado for good in 1938, along with six Angus cows and a Model A Ford.  They spent the rest of their lives eking out a living on their homestead. They saved their farm through the Dust Bowl, wars, droughts, and hailstorms. Because of their strength, determination, and planning, we are proud that it remains in the family today as a thriving wheat farm.
