Grants Awarded

Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site

Kiowa County

Since 1987, the Civil War Trust (CWT) is dedicated to the preservation of American battlegrounds and has preserved more than 40,000 acres of battlefield land at 122 battlefields in 20 different states.

With this SHF grant, CWT will acquire a 640-acre tract located within the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site on behalf of the National Park Service, who will manage and protect the property. The historic but tragic 1864 Sand Creek Massacre is considered a turning point in the relationship between American Indian tribes and the federal government.

This site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
