Showers Ranch

Weld County

Charles Dake left Polk County Nebraska in 1907 and came to Colorado, settling in the Keota area where he built a sod home. His daughter Henrietta followed in 1909, obtaining a relinquishment homestead on an adjoining parcel. She worked hard as a single woman to maintain the homestead. Henrietta married Ed Cassady, a cowboy who rode into the area looking for work, in September of 1921. Henrietta and Ed survived the Great Depression by raising chickens and selling eggs to the hospital in Greeley. The original sod home was destroyed by a tornado in the 1940's. Henrietta's only child Helen continued raising chickens on the ranch until the early 1960's, while raising three children, Janie, Joy and Myron, with her husband Homer Showers. Helen's son Myron Showers took over the ranch in the 1970s where he raises red angus cattle today. Myron and his wife Kathy have two daughters, Heather and Amanda, who grew up enjoying the unique benefits of Colorado ranch life: wide-open spaces to run, playing with cattle dog puppies, riding horses, and raising animals like rabbits, pheasants, ducks, sheep, and of course cows. Our family is grateful for those who settled this beautiful land and persevered through many hardships; we are proud to continue their legacy today.
