Conejos County

The Society for the Mutual Protection of Workers—first founded in 1900 to protect Hispanic property rights and fight discrimination—built the Fraternal Lodge in 1925.

Since its construction, this National Register-listed building has undergone several renovations spanning from 1945-1985, such as the addition of a bathroom, carpet installation, and the fixing a partially collapsed wall. Today the only space used in the building is the offices. The rest of the building requires extensive rehabilitation before it may be used.

Funds from the HC-SHF grant will be used to create a Visitors Center, a museum, and a Community Center for local activities and events, weddings, dances, and workshops. These additions will help to preserve Indio/Hispanic culture in the region, housed in a strong symbol of the diverse cultures and languages of the community.

A white two-story building with red trim on the bottom of the building and the window sills. There are four columns embedded into the building that jut out slightly.
