Teller House

Gilpin County

When it was founded in 1932, the Central City Opera (CCO) set out to preserve the Central City Opera House, but it has since expanded its role to preserve and protect historic resources throughout the community.

Teller House

The CCO now houses most of its organization in its 32 Victorian-era properties located throughout Central City and has remained committed to the ongoing preservation of these historic properties. CCO has worked with SHF on more than a dozen projects, using grants to fund the restoration of the Opera House, the restoration of the Med Building, and the assessment and maintenance plan for the residential properties. This year, the CCO will focus on the rehabilitation of the Teller House, built as a hotel in 1871, and the Assay Office, which was added on to the Teller House in 1890. The Teller House's red brick structure prevented the fire of 1874 from consuming the hotel, making it one of the few surviving buildings of the fire.  With the current grant, CCO will rehabilitate the roof of the Teller House and the roof and north facade of the Assay Office.
