Grants Awarded
Trinity Church (Trinidad) - Holy Trinity Catholic Church
Las Animas County
Founded in 1866 by Reverend P.J. Munnecon, the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Trinidad began as a small single room worship space that could not handle the growing congregation. By 1883 the church began fundraising for a larger church.
They successfully raised the needed resources and built the new church with local sandstone in 1885. The design for the new church came from the influences of the Georgian and Romanesque styles.
In 1913, the church underwent a renewal project that included major renovations to the ceilings of the church. It is now a part of the Corazon de Trinidad National Historic District. Unfortunately, the church has recently suffered damage from an earthquake in 2011 and a hail storm in 2016. As a part of this grant, the funds will be used to rehabilitate different aspects of the roof that need immediate attention as well as securing the foundation of the building. These projects will ensure the safety of the parishioners in the area as well as allowing the church to continue its service to the surrounding community—while preserving one of sole examples of this type of architecture in the area.
