Carnegie Library / Canon City Public Library
Fremont County
A community cornerstone and essential cultural resource, the Cañon City Library has served local residents for over 110 years. Built in 1902 through the extensive efforts of the local Ladies Library Association, the Carnegie-funded library was established to offer residents a much-needed space for reading and research.
In 1982 as a result of population growth, the city built a 13,000-sq. ft., three-story addition, affording the library even greater capacity and prominence. A focal point within the National Register Historic District, the library features numerous historical attributes such as exterior native sandstone walls, mosaic tile floor, golden oak wood trim, and original rolled glass windows. With funding from SHF the City will perform large-scale final rehabilitation, preservation, and restoration to protect the library building for many years to come.
