State Historical Fund awards over $6 million to communities across Colorado for 2013

DENVER – The State Historical Fund (SHF), a program of History Colorado, has awarded 34 competitive grants for historic preservation totaling over $6 million for the fiscal year 2013 grant round. These new grants join 215 already active grant projects, for a total of nearly $25 million in direct investment in the State of Colorado.

Counties awarded grants this round include: Adams, Alamosa, Archuleta, Bent, Boulder, Clear Creek, Custer, Denver, Douglas, El Paso, Gunnison, Hinsdale, Jefferson, Larimer, Montezuma, Montrose, Pueblo, Rio Grande, Routt, Saguache and San Juan.

Project Examples:

Maytag Aircraft Building

One of the finest examples of Modern Movement architecture in Colorado Springs, the 1957 Maytag Aircraft Building—founded by Lewis B. Maytag, Jr., heir to the fortune of Maytag Appliance magnate Lewis B. Maytag, Sr.—will undergo roof rehabilitation and exterior repair with funds from SHF. The building currently houses offices for CASA of the Pikes Peak Region, a nonprofit organization advocating for child victims of domestic violence in El Paso and Teller Counties. CASA is committed to the long-term maintenance of the building, not only for its vital role in their organization, but also for its contribution to the downtown historic landscape.

Other examples of historic buildings and sites receiving grant funds for preservation include the Bromley Farm in Brighton, which plans to rehabilitate its historic barn, and the Shavano Valley Rock Art Site, a 42-acre parcel of well-preserved Ute petroglyphs.

The application deadline for SHF’s next grant round is April 1, 2013.  For a complete list of SHF grants funded this round, visit our Grant Stories Page.  SHF provides counsel to all potential grant applicants.
