History Colorado Emphasizes Early Childhood Learning Basics Through Pre-School Story Time

DENVER, Aug. 25 -- Learning to read begins BEFORE a child starts school — as a matter of fact, it begins at birth. That’s why History Colorado provides education programs that include story telling time and early hours on certain weekends for low-sensory children.  The next Story Time event is Wednesday, September 3, 2014 from 9:30 – 10:00 a.m.

Among the five early literacy practices that every child needs to get ready to read, listen and write, reading together remains the single most effective way to help children become proficient readers.

Research shows that children who enjoy being read to are more likely to want to learn to read themselves.  Reading together develops vocabulary, comprehension, and general knowledge needed to understand other books and stories when they are older.  And, reading introduces children to "rare" words that they may not hear in everyday conversation.

“The History Colorado Center is a resource for parents who are interested in helping their child succeed,” says Alison Salutz, Visitor Experience Coordinator for History Colorado.  “That's why our education department chose to add this type of programming to our offerings, because the research is there that learning to read before kindergarten is critical to a child’s ability to read to learn.”

On Wednesday, September 3, 2014  from 9:30- 10:00 a.m.,  bring your 2 - 5 year olds to story time in our Destination Colorado exhibit and learn about farms, cowboys, and animals.  We'll read a story, and then have playtime in the exhibit before the museum opens.  History Colorado partners with the Denver Public Library on this event.
