America’s Story: A Community Conversation with Journalist Maria Hinojosa

DENVER, September 8 — Facing History and Ourselves, The Allstate Foundation, and History Colorado invite the public to attend America’s Story, a free “Community Conversation” with award winning journalist Maria Hinojosa on Monday September 22 at 7:00pm at the History Colorado Center, 1200 Broadway in Denver. The program is the premier event for RACE: Are we so different? -- a new exhibit opening on September 20 at the History Colorado Center.

Maria Hinojosa is the host of Latino USA, the long-running weekly show on National Public Radio. She has helped tell America's untold stories and brought to light unsung heroes in America and abroad for the past 25 years. Hinojosa is the winner of four Emmy Awards, the 2012 John Chancellor Award for Excellence in Journalism, the Robert F. Kennedy Award for Reporting on the Disadvantaged, the Studs Terkel Community Media Award, and the Edward R. Murrow Award from the Overseas Press Club for best documentary for her groundbreaking "Child Brides: Stolen Lives." In 2010, Hinojosa launched The Futuro Media Group with the mission to produce multi-platform, community-based journalism that gives critical voice to the voiceless by harnessing the power of independent media to tell stories that are overlooked or under reported by traditional media.

Seating is limited. Reservations for this free program are available by visiting www.facinghistory.org/communityconversations or calling 303-316-4848 x221. Simultaneous Spanish interpretation generously provided by DPS Multicultural Language & Outreach Services.

Developed by the American Anthropological Association in collaboration with the Science Museum of Minnesota, RACE is the first exhibition that tells the stories of race from the biological, cultural and historical point of view.  AARP, The Denver Foundation, and Facing History and Ourselves have joined History Colorado to support this unprecedented exhibit, which runs through January 4, 2015.

History Colorado is planning a variety of programs, including a professional development series and workshops for teachers, parents and students.  The museum has launched an extensive community partners program engaging nearly 100 multicultural organizations, the City of Denver, law enforcement and the news media to be part of the conversation and participate throughout the exhibit’s 90-day stay at the History Colorado Center.
