History Colorado Offers New Economic Feasibility Study Option for Grants

Denver - The History Colorado State Historical Fund (SHF) has announced a new funding option for grant applicants. Applicants applying for a Historic Structure Assessment (HSA)―typically a $10,000 grant award—may now apply for an additional $5,000 to conduct an Economic Feasibility Study to determine the most economically sustainable option for reusing their historic building.

Historic Structure Assessments are noncompetitive grants awarded to assess the condition of a historic building, structure, object, or site. Applications for HSAs, including those utilizing the new Economic Feasibility Study, may be submitted at any time throughout the year.

History Colorado created the Economic Feasibility Study option in response to concerns expressed by Coloradans during statewide Listening Sessions held last spring. Many communities that are interested in historic preservation projects are also looking for opportunities for economic development.

“While Historic Structure Assessment grants have helped countless organizations discover the condition of their building and what needs to be preserved,” says State Historical Fund Director Steve Turner, “HSAs don’t address the economic potential of historic properties. The new Economic Feasibility Study is designed to give communities real, actionable strategies for usage and economic revitalization, including how to find additional funding options to accomplish their goals.”

All eligible SHF grant applicants may apply for the Economic Feasibility Study option as an addition to an HSA, including organizations that have received HSAs within the last five years.

SHF awards grants for historic preservation projects to nonprofit organizations and public entities. Since 1991, SHF has awarded more than 4,000 grants to all 64 counties totaling more than $263
million in funding for historic preservation projects around the state.
