History Colorado to honor excellence in Colorado archaeology, historic preservation, and history at awards ceremony on Feb. 3
DENVER – History Colorado will honor outstanding individuals and communities who are preserving Colorado’s diverse past at the History Colorado awards ceremony on February 3 at the History Colorado Center in Denver.
From the esteemed group of nominations, one project is selected to receive the Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation. This year the Governor’s Award will be presented to the City of Leadville, Mayor Jamie Stuever, and the Overland Property group for the rehabilitated of the Tabor Grand Hotel in Leadville to accommodate 37 affordable housing apartments. “This public-private partnership really sets an example on how communities can come together around historic preservation,” said Governor Hickenlooper. “The Tabor Grand Hotel survives as not only an architectural treasure, but also as a testament to the dedication of the Leadville community. ”
In addition to the Governor’s Award, four additional named awards will be given out to groups or individuals for their outstanding work in the area of history, archaeology or historic preservation. The Caroline Bancroft History Project Award and the Josephine H. Miles History Award are given to individuals or organizations that have made a significant contribution to the advancement of Colorado history through education programs, research, exhibitions, collections management projects, historic preservation, publications, legislation and the like. The Miles and Bancroft Awards are differentiated by the communities served. The Bancroft Award is restricted to projects in communities with fewer than 50,000 residents, while the Miles Award is open to all. Stephen H. Hart Awards recognize outstanding projects and individual achievements in archaeology and historic preservation throughout Colorado. Stephen H. Hart awards was Colorado’s first State Historic Preservation Officer.

The event’s presenting sponsor is Holland and Hart. The ceremony is free to attend and begins at 5:30 p.m., but due to limited space, registration is encouraged.
