Buckhorn Ranger Station Historic District

Larimer County

The Buckhorn Ranger Station District is located within the Roosevelt National Forest west of Masonville, Colorado. The property is representative of early multiple use land management of public lands and natural resources by the USDA Forest Service. It also represents a shift to more intensive management during the New Deal era and continued and renewed conservation efforts in the 1960s. The historic district reflects origins of the Forest Service as a government agency and its shifting roles during the Great Depression. The buildings represent a transitional period in Forest Service architectural design standards, where a shift occurred from the 1920s and early 1930s designs, influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement, to a rustic style in the mid to late 1930s and later. The archaeological site of the old ranger station also has intact cultural materials that yield information about its early use as a Forest Service Ranger Station.
