DENVER — July 25, 2023 — On Colorado Day, August 1, 2023, The Centennial State will welcome a new State Historian and leader of History Colorado’s State Historian’s Council. Dr. Claire Oberon Garcia, professor of English at Colorado College, will succeed noted historian and professor Dr. Jared Orsi who continues to serve on the State Historian’s Council. Founded in 2018 this five-person council is made up of interdisciplinary scholars who provide complementary perspectives and rotate the State Historian position every year on Colorado Day.
DENVER — July 18, 2023 — On August 1, 2023, the History Colorado Center in Denver is hosting the definitive birthday party for Colorado featuring more than 20 attractions that combine to create a free-day celebration worthy of the Centennial State and the Mile High City. In addition to this momentous occasion in the heart of downtown Denver, History Colorado’s Museums across the state are joining in on the celebration of Colorful Colorado!

With all of our sites and museums conveniently located within an hour of a National Park or historic railroad, History Colorado is the perfect addition to any summer road trip for wildflower viewings, trail-hoppings, and concert jammings around the Centennial State.
DENVER — June 20, 2023 —History Colorado’sState Historical Fund (SHF) has awarded more than $4.8 million to 25 projects across the state. Nearly 70 percent of these grants were awarded to projects in rural counties of the Centennial State and a third of these directly fund projects designed to support BIPOC communities.
DENVER — June 8, 2023 — History Colorado’sFort Garland Museum & Cultural Center has worked diligently in partnership with eight independent artists to create a new exhibition which disrupts the common narratives of manifest destiny and settlement of the American West. Titled buffalo soldiers: reVision this exhibition opens on June 24, exactly 165 years after Fort Garland was commissioned by the United States, and presents a visual interpretation of the history and impact of the all Black Army regiments that were established in 1866 following the Civil War.
DENVER — June 1, 2023 — History Colorado’sState Archaeologist, Dr. Holly Norton, presented the fourth quarterly progress report about Federal Indian Boarding Schools in Colorado to the Colorado Commission of Indian Affairs (CCIA) on June 1, 2023.
MONTROSE— May 25, 2023 —History Colorado’sUte Indian Museum is happy to announce the Grand Opening of its new Naturescape Playground on June 10, 2023. Inspired by the living history of the three Ute Tribes, the Naturescape Playground is an innovative avenue for recreation, entertainment, and education that instills respect for the natural environment, outdoor stewardship and a deeper understanding of the rich culture of the Ute people.
